The Gospels tell us that scribes stood by the Cross of Jesus accusing him "vehemently."  Scribes, a class of writers, at Calvary?  Why them?

Scribes were a remarkable class of people who became prominent in the 5th century B.C. They gave us the Bible in written form, after an oral tradition from centuries before. 

Knowing what they did, I think, explains why they were at Calvary.  They were lawyers like I am.
